Jeongseon Hwaam Cave is an around one and a half minute tour course in 1,803m long. The Hwaam Cave is designated as Regional Monument of Gangwon-do No. 33. It takes around one and a half hours to tour the cave. How the veins of gold are discovered and excavated, and how gold ores are produced and processed to produce gold products are exhibited in the cave.

Jeongseon Hwaam Cave is composed of 515m upper shaft of Cheonpo gold mine, 365 steps of stairway connecting the upper and lower mine shafts and the 676m lower shaft. This nature-made cave has lots of limestones and stalactites as well as small rooms and lakes. Hwaam Cave is the only themed cave the in Korea under the subject of the encounter of gold and nature. The cave is not just for the tour site, but for the education for children and school students. They can observe the ecosystem in cave and learn how to mine and smelt gold by visiting this cave. For that reason, Hwaam Cave is a popular site for field trips of preschoolers and the students in elementary, middle and high schools.

Tourist Tips

With the theme of “the encounter of gold and nature”, Jeongseon Hwaam Cave is not just for the simple nature sightseeing, but also for education and experiences. Hwaam Cave opens from 9am to 5pm. There is no extra charge for the admission and monorail. “Chapter of History” cave shows the replication of the gold mining workplace and the entire mining process. “The World of Gold” cave provides tourists with various videos introducing gold and there is also shining gold bars exhibited.
